This post addresses the interactivity of a video explaining standard deviation that may be used as a part of our pod’s Interactive Learning Resource. Numbered items refer to the questions at the bottom of the Interaction prompt page.
1. The video does not require interaction from students, nor does it force them to respond in any way.
2. The video has engaging animations and helps to visualize what standard deviation means, and students are likely to take notes on their own, and start thinking about the rest of the unit (standard deviation) in our Interactive Learning Resource.
3. This video will likely be placed at the beginning of the unit in our Interactive Learning Resource, and learning activities afterwards would include how to solve problems involving standard deviation – for example, what the formula is for standard deviation, how to use a calculator to solve problems, how to apply standard deviation to real-world examples, etc.
6. As mentioned in the Veritasium video about the effectiveness of science videos, this video on standard deviation could be improved by giving examples of misconceptions, then resolving the misconception and providing the correct information to avoid having learners feel a false sense of understanding, when in reality, their grasp of the concepts may actually be quite weak.
